Overview

SplitPay is a bill-splitting tool designed for restaurant staff to quickly divide a table’s total bill either equally or based on individual consumption. It enables waiters to assign items to specific customers and calculate accurate payments in real time during service.

Problem

In group dining scenarios, splitting the bill is often slow, manual, and error-prone. Waiters must mentally track what each person ordered and calculate totals on the spot. This leads to delays, mistakes, and a stressful checkout experience for both staff and customers.

Goal

Design a fast, intuitive interface that allows waiters to divide a bill by person, assign items effortlessly, and track payments until the total is fully settled.

My Role

Designed the end-to-end UI and interaction flow, focusing on speed, clarity, and minimizing errors in a high-pressure restaurant environment.

Process

- Mapped real waiter workflows during bill closing
- Identified key actions: creating people, assigning items, tracking totals
- Designed wireframes optimized for quick interaction
- Iterated layouts to reduce steps and cognitive load
- Refined UI to clearly show assignments and remaining balance

Key Decisions & Why

- Supported both equal split and item-based split to match real customer behavior
- Designed a simple ‘create person → assign items’ flow aligned with how waiters think
- Highlighted remaining balance to ensure full payment completion
- Used clear grouping to show item ownership per person
- Minimized interaction steps to speed up service time

Outcome

Created a streamlined bill-splitting experience that reduces calculation errors, speeds up checkout, and improves overall service efficiency. Waiters can now handle complex group payments quickly and confidently.
